Cap’n Crunch

Cap’n Crunch (full name: Captain Horatio Magellan Crunch) is the sea-going advertising mascot of Quaker Oats Cap’n Crunch cereal. The Captain has a  white walrus mustache and wears a jacket with shoulder epaulets and a blue Napoleonic hat bearing the initial “C.”

The Captain (who often said of his cereal “It has to be good because they named it after me!”) commanded the SS Guppy which sailed the oceans with a crew of four children: the pony-tailed Brunnhilde; bespectacled Alfie; gap-toothed Dave; and silent little Carlyle. The ship’s first mate was a dog named Seadog. Pirate John LaFoote often attacked the ship for its cargo of Cap’n Crunch and Crunchberry cereals.

Other characters were the Crunchberry Beast who raised strawberry-flavored crunchberries and Smedley, a friendly elephant who loved peanut butter-flavored Cap’n Crunch.

The Cap’n Crunch commercials (produced by Jay Ward) sailed into the living rooms of America in 1963. Daws Butler supplied Cap’n Crunch’s voice.

Born in Philadelphia, Jerome Alphonse Holst worked 30 years as a librarian. He has since retired and lives in Greensboro, North Carolina. Mr. Holst is also the author of the children’s books “Norman the Troll,” "Norman the Troll and the Haunted House," and "Gretchen and the Gremlins." In addition, he penned the fantasy novel “The Adventures of Glinda Gale,” a retelling of “The Wizard of Oz" and the reference text “The Encyclopedia of Movie and TV Insults.” .
