Slang term used to identify female police officers teamed with a male officer, of course the males being the “Dogs.”


The police drama DOG & CAT/ABC/1977 used this novel description to refer to sexy, young female rookie officer J.Z. Kane (Kim Basinger) who was teamed with Det. Sgt. Jack Ramsey (Lou Antonio), a veteran plainclothes officer.

The two officers (Dog and Cat) reported to Lieutenant Arthur Kipling (Matt Clark), their boss. Officer Zane drove a souped-up Volkswagen Beetle with a Porsche engine.



Born in Philadelphia, Jerome Alphonse Holst worked 30 years as a librarian. He has since retired and lives in Greensboro, North Carolina. Mr. Holst is also the author of the children’s books “Norman the Troll,” "Norman the Troll and the Haunted House," and "Gretchen and the Gremlins." In addition, he penned the fantasy novel “The Adventures of Glinda Gale,” a retelling of “The Wizard of Oz" and the reference text “The Encyclopedia of Movie and TV Insults.” .
