Black Widow, The

The alter ego of Mrs. Max Black, a villain played by veteran movie actress Tallulah Bankhead who appeared on episode No.89/90 (aired 3/15/67 & 3/16/67) of the fantasy series BATMAN/ABC/1966-68.


The Black Widow arrived in Gotham City to commit a series of bank robberies using a paralyzing spray derived from spider venom. To thwart crime fighters Batman and Robin, she lures them into a giant spider web inhabited by two giant black widow spiders.

Note: Black Widow was also the nickname of Pauline Spencer (Ruta Lee), a beautiful woman living in the Dunes Retirement Resort in Arizona on the sitcom COMING OF AGE/CBS/1988-89. She earned the title for having married and then lost (through death) many husbands.

“The Widow Maker” as the name of taxi cab number 413 on the comedy series TAXI/ABC/NBC/1978-83. This dilapidated, non-roadworthy vehicle was assigned by Louie De Palma (Danny  DeVito), a tyrannical New York dispatcher for the Sunshine Cab Company to anyone that irritated him.

And in the Marvel Comics universe, there is also a Black Widow, aka “Natalia “Natasha” Alianovna Romanova.” This scarlet-haired beauty is the world’s greatest spy and master of disguise.


Born in Philadelphia, Jerome Alphonse Holst worked 30 years as a librarian. He has since retired and lives in Greensboro, North Carolina. Mr. Holst is also the author of the children’s books “Norman the Troll,” "Norman the Troll and the Haunted House," and "Gretchen and the Gremlins." In addition, he penned the fantasy novel “The Adventures of Glinda Gale,” a retelling of “The Wizard of Oz" and the reference text “The Encyclopedia of Movie and TV Insults.” .
