Beavers, The

Members of the rural fraternal organization in the town of Norwich, Vermont on the situation comedy NEWHART/CBS/1982-90.

New members are required to wear a beaver tail off the back of their pants. The member nominated as the “Man of the Year” has to buy all the food, decorations and call all the people to come to this festive roast.

How-to-writer Dick Loudon (Bob Newhart), a transplanted New Yorker was a reluctant member in this zany backwoods brotherhood.

The Beaver Lodge’s annual Memorial Day weekend featured a spaghetti-and-tomato sauce dinner.

Note: On the sitcom ONE DAY AT A TIME/CBS/1975-84 macho “God’s gift to women” apartment superintendent Dwayne F. Schneider (Pat Harrington, Jr.) belonged to the North Central Chapter of the fraternal group “The Secret Order of Beavers.” Dwayne headed the lodge’s activities and entertainment committee.


Born in Philadelphia, Jerome Alphonse Holst worked 30 years as a librarian. He has since retired and lives in Greensboro, North Carolina. Mr. Holst is also the author of the children’s books “Norman the Troll,” "Norman the Troll and the Haunted House," and "Gretchen and the Gremlins." In addition, he penned the fantasy novel “The Adventures of Glinda Gale,” a retelling of “The Wizard of Oz" and the reference text “The Encyclopedia of Movie and TV Insults.” .
